About UK Games Magazines
The (near)complete archive of Britains Gaming Print media.
UK Games Mags is a non-commercial preservation and reference project dedicated to cataloguing and archiving video game magazines published in the United Kingdom. Originally created to host and share archival magazine scans, the project has steadily expanded into a searchable database documenting issues, reviews, guides, adverts, covermounts, supplements, and other material found throughout the history of UK games media.
The aim of the site is not only to preserve scans, but also to preserve the wider context surrounding them. Every issue represents a snapshot of gaming culture at a particular moment in time, and this archive exists to help document and organise that history for researchers, collectors, enthusiasts, and long-time readers alike.
The archive contains both scans produced directly for the project and material contributed by other preservationists and community members. Additional information, metadata, and content are continually being added as the archive grows and evolves.
We do not wish to ever infringe upon copyrights or earning potentials so we try and preserve and archive those magazines that are not commercially available online or in person today. if you believe we have overstepped any of these boundaries please do contact us and we will takedown any relevant content immediately.
What our archive contains
The archive currently contains thousands of individual entries covering UK video game magazines and their related content. This includes full magazine issues, game reviews, previews, strategy guides, adverts, covermounts, supplements, and downloadable scans sourced from a variety of preservation efforts.
Alongside the scans themselves, the site also aims to catalogue the wider history surrounding UK games media, including publishers, journalists, developers, systems, peripherals, and other material connected to the magazines and the era in which they were published.
As the archive continues to grow, additional metadata, imagery, credits, and historical information are continually being researched, verified, and added to the database.
Our information & credits
Each Issue page acts as a detailed archive entry for an individual magazine release. Alongside high quality cover imagery and publication information, Issue pages may include historical notes, editorial summaries, release details, cover dates, publishers, editors, and contributor credits where known.
Additional sections throughout the page catalogue the wider contents of each issue, including reviews, previews, strategy guides, adverts, supplements, covermounts, and downloadable scans. Where available, pages may also contain information relating to playable demo discs, game videos, featured journalists, and external archive availability.
All information is provided to the best of our ability and is of course, subject to change. If you have any suggestions for updates or changes then contact us!
Style guide
Magazine Titles - Where possible we will try and keep all issues of a magazine together but when necessary we will separate magazine titles into two. For example when PSM2 magazine became PSM3, it was a permanent change that lasted for many issues whereas some magazines dabble with small naming changes over a couple of issues. In these instances, the most relevant name will be used. If we can, we will list the successive or preceding magazine on the magazines main page and any previous/next issue links that cross Magazine Title divides will be accounted for.
Issue titles - Generally we will try and copy the official name of the title given either on the spine or cover of the issue. Where an issue hasnt been archived yet or is a work in progress we may use a simple Title + Issue # as it's name.
Dates - Likewise, we will use the date given on the cover or spine (occasionally internally). Where possible we will also give the date the issue was available on sale so that you get a clear snapshot of when this issue was available.
Contributors - We will use the credits sections of individual issues to try and fill out the contributors section. Previously this section was called journalists but not all of those listed specifically wrote for the issue so the contributor tab includes anyone who may have provided text, information, artwork or more to that specific magazine. In the downloads area contributors refers to those who have scanned, donated, edited or in some way helped to contribute towards the preservation of that title.
Wikipedia and Mobygames - Where required, we have used and credited database texts from these two sources.
OldGameMags, RetroMags and Out of Print
Before UK Games Magazines was even an idea we have been contributors, users and friends of these sites and we wish to see the continued use, submissions and expansions of these great projects. We will never host, steal or use scans from these sources without specific prior consent and full credits to any users involved. We thank all of our friends at these sites who have helped with information and more to put towards this project.
